Multi-Axis Machining Expert Search

We were tasked with finding a Multi-Axis Machining Engineering Expert who needed to be degreed, have prior experience programming 4, 5 & 6 axis machining equipment, be a good communicator, have management experience, know several alloys, understand the requirements for AS9100 and have prior experience with a variety of continuous improvement tools.

We began the search by identifying locations in the U.S. who offered finished machining services, using multi-axis machining equipment. We found several Machine Shops, Forge Shops and Foundries who were using multi-axis equipment. We then combed through these shops to find locations who were machining several different types of alloys and began identifying a variety of prospective Engineering candidates to pursue.

As we began evaluating these professional machinists from across the country, there were 2 major categories which eliminated most prospective multi-axis programming experts in the United States:

  1. No Engineering Degree

  2. Not enough management experience

Though the majority of the country's multi-axis experts were missing a Bachelor’s degree and the necessary management experience, we were still able to identify 129 prospective candidates who we believed may be qualified and these were all degreed candidates with multi-axis machining and programming experience.

We eliminated any candidate who did not possess the following criteria:

  1. Must have Bachelor's Degree or higher

  2. Must have at least 10yrs experience in a Machining Manufacturing Engineering, or CNC Programming, or Tooling Engineering role

  3. Must have Programming experience

  4. Must have experience with multi axis, 4,5,6 axis machining

  5. Must have some experience with exotic alloys like Titanium, Stainless, Nickel, Aluminum

  6. Must have previous experience implementing and using continuous improvement tools such as Lean, 6-S, Six Sigma, etc.,

  7. Must have experience with quality systems and standards like ISO 9001 and/or AS9100

  8. Must have a minimum of 5yrs managing/supervising experience

  9. Must have a collaborative leadership style

  10. Must have a proven track record in continuous improvement and development of people

  11. Must be a Manager that is also involved with the shop floor

  12. Must be able to communicate as an Executive as well as with the hourly employees

  13. Must not have history of job hopping

  14. Must be willing to work 6 days a week at 55+ hrs per week

  15. Must fit with company culture

  16. Must be able/willing to relocate

We ultimately identified and contacted 129 prospective candidates who we believed might be qualified from across the U.S. machining industries. Our initial criteria were degreed individuals with multi-axis machining and programming experience who’ve been in management for at least 5 years. Once we got them on the phone, we evaluated their education, managerial experience, servant leadership skills, continuous improvement experience, compensation expectations, willingness to relocate, etc.

From the 129 people we spoke with:

  • 11 candidates were submitted & phone interviewed

  • 4 candidates were brought for onsite interviews

In 4 ½ months we identified, attracted, thoroughly screened and successfully hired a premier Multi-Axis Machining Expert, and we ended up finding him locally which saved the company relocation expenses!
